Bruises Cry for Cryotherapy

February 21, 2015

When a small quantity of blood gets trapped under your skin, the result is a blackish-blue mark known as a bruise. A bruise manifests due to a blow that breaks blood vessels that are close to the surface of your skin.

Bruises cry for cryotherapy because the cold slows down both bruising and swelling. Ice packs should be applied to bruises 24-48 hours following an injury that causes bruising or inflammation. Calming cold packs are fast acting, so they should not be left on your skin for more than 20 minutes at a time. Ice packs also reduce circulation, which in turn reduces any pain you may experience.

Hot packs, hot tubs, and steam rooms should be avoided for 48 hours following an injury since heat can increase swelling. If puffiness has disappeared after 48-72 hours, you can apply a hot pack to restore and preserve flexibility.
