Heavenly Relief for Neck Pain

If you are experiencing neck soreness or stiffness, your disks between the bones – muscles – nerves – or vertebrae bones may be causing the pain. You may notice that moving your neck is difficult, especially when you turn it to the left or right. It is estimated that 7 out of every 10 adults will encounter neck pain at some point, so it is a common complaint. It is comforting to know that neck pain is rarely an indication of a more serious medical condition; however, it is literally a “pain in the neck.” It is important to get medical care when numbness – tingling – or weakness in your arm or hand coexists with your neck pain since these are signs that the nerves are involved.

You may find relief by using a hot or cold pack, or you may prefer one over the other. Heat and ice packs should be left in place for 20 minutes, which is the doctor recommended time. You can reapply the gel pack several times a day, making sure to wait at least 20 minutes after your last application. If you experience neck soreness, a hot pack will relieve pain by increasing blood flow, and promote ease of movement by decreasing muscle spasms. You should not use a hot pack if swelling is present or if you have diabetes or poor circulation. When the weather is chilly, and you are cold, a heated pack will relax you and your muscles, as well as keep you snugly warm.

Any time you have swelling, you should use an ice pack rather than a hot pack. A chilled ice pack helps decrease inflammation and swelling by narrowing blood vessels, and reduces pain by numbing. Cold works by slowing blood flow, making an icy cold pack desirable when inflammation, swelling or pain is a problem. Allow a refreshing ice pack to numb your pain and cool you down at the same time.
